Phil has a strong technical and commercial background from a successful career with Shell, where for over 14 years he developed significant depth of experience across all key sectors of the Downstream oil industry including refining and supply, marketing and sales, pricing strategy, risk management, corporate strategy and portfolio project management.
From 2007 to 2013, Phil ran his own consultancy providing project development, commercial and M&A, and management expertise to a number of sectors including LNG, Biofuel, Clean Coal, Geothermal Energy, Building Products, Logistics and FMCG.
Phil completed a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering with Honours from the University of Sydney in 1988, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from University of NSW in 1993.
Phil joined Calix as CEO in 2013, was appointed a Director in 2014, and is a member of Calix’s Technology Committee.
Executive Director & Chief Scientist
Dr Mark Sceats is a qualified physical chemist with 40 years’ experience. He has degrees in Science (Hons 1st Class) and a PhD (University of Queensland).
Mark has previously worked at the James Franck Institute at the University of Chicago, and as an Assistant Professor of the University of Rochester NY, USA, where he was awarded the Alfred P Sloan Fellowship for his work. Later he was employed by the University of Sydney as a Reader in the School of Chemistry for his research work on chemical reaction kinetics. Mark has published more than 140 academic papers in physical chemistry, and is the inventor of 25 patented inventions.
Mark was awarded the M.A. Sargent Medal of the Institute of Engineers Australia for his contributions to optical communications and the Centenary Medal of the Commonwealth of Australia for his contributions to Australian society.
He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, and a Companion of the Institute of Engineers Australia.
Mark founded Calix in 2005, was re-elected as a Director in 2014 and is a member of Calix’s Technology Committee.
CFO / Company Secretary
Darren has more than 15 years’ experience in high-growth technology companies. Prior to joining Calix he was CFO and Company Secretary of Seeker Wireless Pty Ltd and CFO and Executive Director of the ASX-listed company Altium Limited.
Darren has led finance functions that have scaled to manage business growth internationally, from operations in two countries and turnover of $5 million to operations in nine countries and turnover of $80 million. His experience includes IPOs, private equity raisings, M&A and all facets of a finance function including international tax, budgeting, corporate planning and financial reporting and compliance.
He is a Fellow of CPA of Australia and holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) degree (University of Tasmania).
General Manager - Business Development
Andrew began his career at Pasminco’s Research Centre in Newcastle in 1990, where he investigated various hydro- and pyro-metallurgical processes. Andrew joins Calix after a 17-year career at Outotec where his most recent role was Director, Sales and Marketing for the South East Asia Pacific region, in addition to being a member of the executive management team.
Andrew’s experience covers general business management, sales process design, contract formation and negotiation, business and technical presentations, and strategic planning. He has been involved in several international projects, with particular exposure to Asia, and has worked with a wide range of minerals and metals.
Andrew holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Metallurgical) degree (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University), a Postgraduate Certificate in Marketing and a Master of Business Finance (University to Technology, Sydney).
Engineering & Operations Manager
John comes from a background in the oil and gas, petrochemical, and power generation industries with over 22 years’ experience both in Australia and overseas.
John began his career at Tema Engineers in 1991, a specialist supplier in solids / liquids separation equipment, where he was responsible for the tendering, pilot plant trials, engineering and project execution of modular water treatment plant projects. During his 11 year tenure with Linde Group, an international specialist Process Engineering and Contracting Company, John took on various roles ranging from project management, construction and commissioning engineering. He gained considerable experience working on projects such as cryogenic air separation plants, industrial gas plants, petrochemical plants and LNG plants. John has worked for other high profile engineering and construction companies including Foster Wheeler, UGL, John Holland and most recently Lend Lease Infrastructure Services.
John has been involved in several international major multidiscipline EPC projects, covering various phases of the design and construction process, many contractual aspects of project management, and multicultural team management challenges. He has particular expertise in leading and managing the delivery of the design phase of multidiscipline engineering type projects as well as having significant experience in managing the procurement and construction phases.
John holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Chem) degree (UNSW).
Managing Director - Calix Europe
Adam began his career as a project Chemical Engineer with ICI where he developed applications for the Pulp and Paper industry, including a novel alternative use of MgO in peroxide bleaching leading to a successful patent application.
Adam joined Calix in July 2010 to run and develop the Calix Bacchus Marsh site after spending 15 years in technical and operations management across diverse industries including chemicals, starch and sugar, wine, plastic packaging, printing and cardboard packaging.
Since joining Calix Adam has overseen the building and commissioning of both the CFC850 (pilot) and CFC15000 (commercial) calciners together with site facilities that house R&D, maintenance and office activities. The total investment on the Bacchus Marsh site since 2010 is more than $30M. Bacchus Marsh is now an operating plant with the capability of producing 25,000tpa of magnesium oxide as well as providing R&D and toll manufacturing services.
Adam recently moved to the UK to manage LEILAC, a €21M EU funded project to build a Calix CFC calciner within an operating cement plant to demonstrate large scale, efficient CO2 separation. While in the UK Adam will also be responsible for Calix’s expanding business into Europe.
Adam holds a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree (RMIT University) and a Masters of Engineering Science (Monash University).
Audrey is responsible for all marketing and communication activities including developing Calix brand, customer relationship management, public relations, and events. Together with the Business Development Team, she supports the development and implementation of sales and marketing plans Calix's business units.
Audrey specialises in the fields of marketing and communications for engineering businesses and has a thorough understanding of the engineering industry.
Previously, she was National Marketing Manager for Douglas Partners, an Australian leader in geotechnical engineering and Marketing Coordinator for an international construction and civil engineering firm. Prior to settling in Australia, Audrey worked in sourcing and procurement in China for several years.
Audrey’s experience in marketing and communications supports Calix in its constant growth and development.
Audrey holds a Master of Business, an MBA in International Business, speaks four languages and is a certified Yoga Instructor.
